The Land Between the Lakes

A wonderful gem at Kentucky Lake was a conservation area called the Land Between the Lakes. It's situated between Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. Camping is available, plenty of trails for hiking, canoeing, a nature station, planetarium, elk and bison prairie....the list goes on. I hope when the boys get older, we can camp in the area and take advantage of some of the other amenities.

This trip, we checked out the Nature Station. We arrived just in time for a naturalist to do a small snake talk, which included bringing out a pine snake. There was only one other family there and Mitchell loved the chance to hold, pet and get eye to eye with the snake.

Once we were done checking out all the snake stuff, animal skins and bugs galore, we headed out the the backyard area. This area drew hummingbirds, finches, woodpeckers and others. I've never seen hummingbirds swarm like they did here. They also had a wide range of rescue animals. Eagles, coyotes, wolves, turkeys, owls were among the few we could encounter along a nice, shaddy, wooded trail. We let Allen roam free for a bit here and the brothers had a fun time chasing each other, looking at animals and enjoying more of the awesome weather we had on this trip. Allen just loves to be out in the fresh air.

Jeremy was really wishing we would've messed with the shutter speed on this pic!

Around the turkey area, there were many signs warning that the turkeys would bite if little fingers made it through the fence. Upon hearing that warning, Mitchell thought it would be best if he didn't get to close to these creatures!
