Flashback: Halloween

For months before Halloween arrived, Mitchell had annouced he was going to be Superman. Grandma bought a superman shirt and was going to work on a cape. Just before she started, he changed his mind to Captain America (Thank you to the show The Avengers). With the movie out last summer, there was no shortage of Captain America costumes...but they seemed uncomfortable and of poor quality for the money. So, that means, I was going to make it. I thought he would let me just use one of the shirts commerically made that looks like Captain America's shield. "No, Mommy. His shirt has just a start with stripes on the bottom." So I ironed  start onto a shirt and did a last minute addition of stripes ("on the front and the back, Mommy"). Got some sweatpants. "Mommy, I need red boots." Fortunately, I was able to convince him his red shoes were OK. "I need a hat with an A on it." Upon seeing the hat, he decided he needed the "things on the side." I told him we were out of time, it was party day at school, so we had to go with what we had. Phew, good enough- but no small task.

Mitchell got to pick out Allen's costume again this year (within reason). When he was going to be Superman, Allen was going as Captain America. When that changed, Allen was going as the Hulk. I wondered if I was really going to be able to find a lime green shirt and purple sweats without hearts or stars on them. Thankfully, Kohls and Walmart came though.

The boys had a grand time with Halloween. With Halloween on Monday this year, there were so many Halloween festivities that it made it a very long holiday. The school party was on Friday, and I took the day off of work to hang with the boys for their parade, trick or treating event and lunch. As soon as Allen walked into the room where parade spectators gathered, he got very apprehensive and started crying. He spent the rest of the parade time on my lap or within reach. Mitchell's class did great and looked adorable. Quite the group of hams at that age.

Then, the older kids went to Grandfriends to trick or treat. Twice a month, the kids visit a nursing home and independent senior living building that is accross the street. The staff and residents were more than happy to hand out candy to our little guys! They were very well behaved and polite.

On Sunday, Grammy and Grandaddy hosted a pre-Halloween dinner. We took the boys in their costumes so they could show them off. Little did we know, Grammy would be in the Halloween spirit as well!

We played a rousing game of "pin the nose on the Jack-o-Lantern." Mitchell had the best placement. I also loved that all the adults got in on this on as well! Mitchell also made a cute ghost hanging (that still adorns his room as we countdown to Thanksgiving).

Fast forward to Monday, when Mitchell wore his Halloween costume again (because he could!). We came home, had a nice (healthy) dinner and he and I headed out to the neighborhood while Allen and Daddy stayed home. We did just enough houses to almost fill the bucket and he was ready to come home and check out his loot! Now, if I could get get this leftover candy out of here without eating it (yeah, right)!
